The real Paul Simon: songs, spats and the spectre of Art

From the mid-1960s to the late-1980s, there were four major male North American singer-songwriters that set the form's agenda. Bob Dylan had the tongue-twisting literacy that mixed Americana narratives with canny zeitgeist sensibilities. Neil Young had the sweet tunes and the hippies on his side. Leonard Cohen had the impish sense of humour, the spiritual frame of mind and the sensual demeanour. It was Paul Simon, however, who leapfrogged over his most obvious influences, engaging with music genres outside his own country.

Philip Roth, who died last Tuesday aged 85, became one of America's most famous writers on the publication of his novel Portnoy's Complaint (1969), which saw him hailed as a comic genius and denounced as a Jewish anti-Semite. Although his subsequent work secured him a place in the roll of his country's greatest novelists, there were many who persisted in seeing him as little more than literature's dirtiest old man.

Sixty years ago this summer, British filmmakers Peter Rogers and Gerald Thomas released a comedy called Carry On Sergeant. Directed by Thomas, it had been pulled together in a matter of weeks on a shoestring. Its story of a group of incompetents enduring their national service was tailor-made to appeal to a mass audience, but there were no thoughts of Carry on Sergeant being anything other than a one-off.

Ads on the Frontline (BBC1) yanked narrator Eamonn Holmes out of his cuddly comfort zone for a chilling flashback to troubled times. The documentary, narrated by Holmes, traced the inception and evolution of a series of adverts for the North's Confidential Telephone Line to the security forces. It began by shifting us back to 'The Future', the first promo aired in 1988 which shocked viewers with its graphic staged knee-capping and stitched-in footage of the IRA's Enniskillen atrocity.

Madame Bovary is full of neat sentences, but here are two of the neatest. Flaubert is describing how Emma's affair with Leon has gone as flat as her life with Charles: "She was as disgusted with him as he was sick of her. Emma rediscovered in adultery all the banalities of marriage." The prose is a thing of exquisite, cruel balance: it laces two lovers together as an incompatible pair, then parallels the failing affair with the marriage it was meant to betray. If it were any looser, more demonstrative, it wouldn't cut so deep.

Is Han Solo divisible from Harrison Ford? Disney must certainly be hoping so, because this entire $250million prequel has been built around an adventure in which Ford does not appear. The film has been described as a space western, in which Alden Ehrenreich plays a young and impetuous Solo, who has not yet found the swagger and cynicism that would make him everyone's favourite Star Wars character. The rapidly expanding rebooted franchise was always going to have to find room for him, but this standalone spin-off has not evolved smoothly.
