This week we're tackling the topic of urban cycling. Our guests include Eben Weiss, author of The Ultimate Bicycle Owner's Manual. As a parent, you often don't remember how much easier life was pre-kids until you try to do something basic, such as stay in a hotel. Before being with child, you could walk into the room, plop your stuff down, climb into bed, and watch the Reese Witherspoon movie marathon on TV for hours while eating Flaming Hot Cheetos (or, you know, do the things you love). When you have a baby who sleeps on a very particular schedule, under very particular conditions (sunlight is evil!), hotel living can be an ordeal. (Note. If you have a baby who can snooze like a log at a monster truck show and believe it is parents who create delicate infant sleep habits, look, I'm... too tired to fight.) More »

Socks are the go-to example of a bad holiday gift from an uncaring gifter (or a relative who doesn't really know you), but that's an unwarranted reputation, if you ask me. If you're in a cold weather climate, you wear thick ones every day, but chances are you don't have 10 or 15 or even seven pairs to last you through a laundry cycle. If you have an office job, you need a lot of dress socks, and if you're an athlete you may need specialty socks (I recently purchased cushioned running socks and they changed my life, or at least my feet). The list goes on. And all those socks don't come cheap. More »

The holiday season can be a saccharine overload - consider the case of heiress Sunny von Bulow, who fell into a comatose state from which she'd never wake following a 1982 Christmas celebration. Authorities accused her husband Claus of attempting to murder her by injecting her with insulin. Claus maintained that Sunny had, like so many of us during the holiday festivities, merely overindulged - in her case with an eggnog/barbiturate cocktail. One jury found Claus guilty. Another found him innocent. Sunny died, still in a coma, in 2008. A very good movie, Reversal of Fortune, was made about the whole thing. It's a much better movie than Love Actually, Miracle on 34th Street, or any other Christmas movie I can think of except maybe Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. More »

There's something magical about cancelling plans last minute - yes, I've heard the John Mulaney joke. You instantly get to do whatever you want and not feel beholden to anyone. True freedom is only a shameful text away. But flaking out is a slippery slope that can lead to a detrimental, and fairly rude, habit. Here's why you get such a rush of relief when your evening suddenly frees up, and how to stop yourself from becoming the person who always bails. More »
